Shots ring across the frozen fields
Frost bites into my already chilled skin
I hug my knees to my chest, trying to get warm
GONG! The bell begins to toll
It’s the next day, it’s Christmas morn
Silence falls heavily across the plain
Listening closely, I hear something faint
A voice, winding through the air
Singing a Christmas carol
I drop my gun, climbing out of the trench
Crowds of enemy soldiers stand unarmed
Singing together, as one, inviting us to join
From that day on
“What so proudly we hail’d. At the Twilight’s last gleaming”
Was the Day that No One Died
And the Night of the Singing
